BRD REFLECTIONS:

Amos 5 and Psalm 105:23-45 (NIV)

(Patricia Yeo, LCEC Treasurer)

READ

Psalm 105:23-45 (NIV)

This passage summarises the history of the Israelites when God delivered them from their suffering in Egypt through signs and miracles and fulfilled His promises to Abraham.

OBSERVE:

1. God’s punishment of His people’s enemies

God sent plague after plague in Egypt where the Israelites were enslaved to punish the Egyptians (v25-36) so that they would let His people be free.

God ‘brought out Israel with silver and gold’ (v37) when the Egyptians, at their wits’ end, willingly parted with their riches to be rid of the Israelites.

2. God’s provision for His people

The Israelites ‘asked and God brought quail and gave them bread from heaven in abundance. He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river’ (v 40-41). God provided everything they needed to survive.

3. God’s purposes for His people

God ‘gave them the lands of the nation, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil, that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws.’ (v 44-45)

God’s purpose was to preserve His people so that they would follow Him.

APPLY:

This passage showed me that:

  1. God is the plumbline of justice and, in His time, He will right all wrongs.
  2. He will deliver us from our troubles and give us a new landing so that we can revere Him and stay close to His Word.
  3. If hardships and impediments come our way as we try to follow God’s ways, we must keep faith that God will provide all that is needed to see us through.
  4. Even with the prevailing wars and conflicts around us and a world filled with injustice and suffering, we remind ourselves that those who stay true to His laws and statutes and keep the faith will be called to share in His glory and fulfil His purposes.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, thank you for always being with us in our journey even when we cannot see the reasons for the troubles, confusion and injustice in this world. Help us to keep our eyes on you, give us a hunger to feed on your Word and find us fit to run the race towards you. May you grant us holy discipline to stay true to you. In Jesus name, Amen.
