Relying On God

BRD REFLECTION 2025

1 Chronicles 28; 29 and Psalm 79 (NIV)

(Victor Chan, Pastoral Team Member)

READ:

For this devotion, I have focused on the verse 1 Chronicles 28:20: “David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.”

OBSERVE:

In 1 Chronicles 28, Solomon was chosen to take over from David as king. Solomon not only had to rule the kingdom, but he was also tasked to coordinate the building of the Temple for the Lord. It was a daunting task for a young king!

David knew Solomon was young and inexperienced (1 Chronicles 29:1). He knew Solomon’s limitations and the enormous task that he had to take on. He encouraged Solomon to be strong and courageous and to do the work. He told Solomon to neither be afraid nor discouraged, for the God who was with him will also be Solomon.

APPLY:

As I reflect on these verses, I am reminded of how I always rely on my own strength and abilities to do and complete a certain task.

I recall when I first started full-time ministry in a para-organization. Being young and inexperienced, I had never dealt with children before. Yet, my boss assigned me to write the full set of children’s camp curriculum. This curriculum was to be used to run the children’s programme for churches at their annual church camps. Like Solomon, I had no confidence in handling the task. I was afraid that I would not be able to meet the mark. I was worried that I would bring down the organisation’s  reputation. However, my boss encouraged me to rely on God for strength and He will lead me one step at a time. As I embarked on the project, I learnt that it was not about my strength and abilities. It was neither about how hard I need to work nor about whether I can do the task. It was a matter of whether I would step out in faith, rely on God and have confidence in Him and His faithfulness will see me through. In the end, I managed to complete the project well. Indeed, God can enable, only if we focus on Him!

DO:

I will rely on God and His faithfulness as I embark on the various tasks that God has called and given me to do.

PRAY:

Father God, help me to rely on You as I carry out the task that You have given to me. Help me to have confidence in You and to know that Your faithfulness will see me through.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
