READ:

2 Kings 4:1-7 and Psalm 95 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

In 2 Kings 4, we are told that Elisha ministered during a difficult time in Israel’s history. Through the prophet, however, ordinary people experienced God’s miracles in their everyday lives.

A man who revered God died and left his widow laden with debt. Desperate because the creditors were about to take her two sons away as slaves, she turned to Elisha for help. When asked, this widow replied that she had nothing, except a small jar of olive oil in her house.

Elisha‘s subsequent instructions required the widow to exercise faith, and she obeyed. She was blessed by a flow of oil from her small jar, which miraculously filled all the empty vessels collected from her neighbours. She sold the oil, repaid the debt, and even had excess funds for her family to live on.

Psalm 95 says “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.” We offer our praise and thanksgiving to the Rock of our salvation, and we bow down in worship before our Maker.

APPLY:

The widow was in a dire situation, but she knew where to seek help. In obedience, she followed Elisha’s unusual instructions step by step, and God rewarded her faith.

I am assured that like the widow, when I obey, I can allow the Holy Spirit and God’s community to guide my thoughts and actions. How wonderful it is to be part of God’s perfect plan!

DO:

I will be grateful for the blessings received, and turn to our gracious God every day, as well as during times of need. I am not very confident nor competent, but by faith, I want to be available for God, to use my time, experience, and spiritual gifts for His glory. I will do what I can, and leave the rest to God.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the many blessings in my life. Please forgive me when I am slow or reluctant to obey Your promptings.
I join the hymn writer to give thanks: ‘For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth, over and around us lies. Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.’ Amen.
