Isaiah 10:5-34 and Psalm 112 (NIV)

(Nicole Shen, from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Psalm 112  (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Psalm 112 is is an adulation of God’s blessing on those who worship and fear Him. It is a promise of what God can and will do for those who love Him, speaking about what they can enjoy. Not only physical well-being, like safety and financial stability (v3) but even emotional (v8) and psychological (v7) well-being, are assured.

In this Psalm, those who are good, righteous and do God’s work can feel assured that they will be greatly blessed by God and need not fear hardships or their enemies.

APPLY:

The year has been a busy one at work for me, with a lot to do, and I often find myself feeling tired and unfulfilled. In response, I have often tried to overcome these challenges by working harder and putting more and more of myself into my work. I worried about how well I was doing and if I was satisfying my superiors with my performance.

However, reading and meditating on Psalm 112 made me realise that I was putting my energy into things that won’t matter in the long run. I was burdening myself with a fear of something going wrong if I wasn’t “good enough”. In truth, the only thing that should really matter to me is my relationship with God – is what I am doing pleasing in His eyes? Am I serving His people in ways that He wants me to?

Psalm 112 tells me that by putting God first, I need not worry about bad things happening. He provides assurance that those who fear Him, who listen to His Word and carry out His will, will prosper and “even in darkness, light dawns” for them.

DO:

I should spend more of my time and energy dwelling in God’s presence, and worshipping Him joyfully because of what He promises. I need not feel defeated even if the world seems to want to beat me down, because if God is with me, I can surely overcome anything.

PRAY:

Father, thank You for this beautiful psalm and the assurance that You continue to be with me even in tough times. I pray that I learn to lean on You when I am in distress and remember that I don’t have to do it all on my own. You are a loving Father, and You only have bountiful joy to offer us. Amen.
