Caught Up With Pride?

BRD REFLECTION 2026

Matthew 5:38-48 and Psalm 39:1-6 (NIV)

(Victor Chan, Pastoral Team)

READ:

Matthew 5:38-42 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Matthew 5:38-42 illustrates how, as human beings, our instinct is to retaliate by getting even and seeking fairness and justice for ourselves. However, Jesus calls His disciples to live a life of grace, love, and freedom. When He says to “turn to them the other cheek… and… give to the one who asks you…”, He is not endorsing injustice by calling us to be doormats. Rather, Jesus is showing us how to live a life that neither is ruled by our pride, nor allows someone’s wrongdoing to dictate the condition of our hearts.

APPLY:

As I reflected, I recalled an incident that happened long ago when I was accused of something and in response, tried to take matters into my own hands. It was so bad that I wanted to seek justice for myself. I was plotting my revenge, hoping that I could get back at the person or make that person suffer. I was boiling mad inside, ready to fire all my “artillery” even though I kept quiet each time! I can still remember how those thoughts consumed me day and night. It became laborious and wore me out. It was only when I repented and lifted the matter up to the Lord that I realised how concerned I had been with proving myself right, instead of reflecting God’s righteousness. God reminded me to submit to Him and allow His love and grace to flow within me. He set me free. By letting go of my pride and allowing God to take charge, the accusation could no longer dictate my life.

DO:

I will choose to follow the example of Jesus: to take up my cross daily, absorb the offences directed at me, release my grip on pride, and walk in His way.

PRAY:

Father God, help me to always allow Your love and grace to flow within me, so that I can live a life that reflects Your righteousness freely. I want You to take charge of my life so that I will not be dictated by the things of this world, especially pride itself.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
