Reciprocal Faithfulness

Genesis 25:1-18 and Psalm 86:11-17 (NIV)

READ:
The passages of Genesis 25:5–8, and Psalm 86:11-13 stood out to me.
OBSERVE:
Abraham led a remarkable life, and reading about his final days makes me reflect on the journey of faith God brought him through. The Bible records so many moments when he chose to take giant leaps of trust, though it must have been terribly hard to do so.
There were so many times when Abraham expressed his doubts, whether directly or through his actions. Yet God never gave up on him. He rescued Abraham again and again, and even blessed him abundantly in spite of it all.
I think Psalm 86 gives insight into how reciprocal faith works. The psalmist acknowledges his need to learn God’s ways so that he can grow in faithfulness. In the same way, as God revealed more of Himself to Abraham, especially His power and faithfulness, Abraham eventually came to trust Him with all his heart. Even at the end, Abraham held fast to God’s promise to make a great nation through him and made careful provision for Isaac.
To me, God’s great love for Abraham is clearest in His tender nurturing and in the way He walked with him through every season of his life.
APPLY:
Sometimes, when I am in the thick of my struggles, it is hard to remember that I, too, am on a faith journey and that God is shaping me toward an undivided heart. In these moments, I think it is important to take a step back and let God lead the way, speak, and show me what He is teaching me about Himself and His ways.
DO:
Psalm 86 is written in the present tense, making it a timeless reminder of how we should relate to God. It will become part of my regular prayers, reminding me how to posture myself before Him and recall the ways He has been faithful to me in the past.
PRAY:
Dear God, thank You for choosing me and for walking with me each step of the way. Strengthen my faith in You as I make time to reflect on Your work, and mould in me an undivided heart. In Jesus’ name I pray.
