Revelation 19 and Psalm 142 (NIV)
(Jabez Fong, Pastoral Associate, Young Adults)
READ:
Revelation 19:1-5 and Psalm 142 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Revelation 19:1-5 the writer of Revelation hears a great cry in heaven praising God with a mighty roar.
Verse 2 reveals why: God’s judgements are true and just and He has therefore judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with immorality. Crucially, this judgement is not merely a punishment of evil, but His vengeance on account of His servants’ lives. In v3, God is praised for judging evil forever and ever.
In Psalm 142, we see the lament of the Psalmist who pours out his complaint to God, overwhelmed by persecution and a sense that no one cares for him (v. 1- 4). Despite his despair, he turns to God as his refuge and his portion, his only hope of salvation. He pleads for deliverance so he may continue to praise God’s name (v 5-7).
APPLY:
I think of the times when I have tasted injustice as the Psalmist did, whether it was taking the blame for something that was not my fault, or facing circumstances stacked against me with no one to hear my defence.
In these circumstances, Revelation reminds me that God does not ignore injustice, nor is He passive; His true and just character demands justice. Even if I do not taste justice now, one day there will be complete and final justice. More importantly, this righting of all wrongs will not only be in my life, but throughout all creation.
At the same time, Psalm 142 encourages me to pour out my pain and frustration in lament to God. Like the Psalmist, I can cry out in faith, trusting that God in His faithfulness hears and will deliver me.
DO:
I will remember God’s goodness and faithfulness, and live righteously, trusting that God will deal bountifully with me.
PRAY:
God of all creation, nothing escapes Your knowledge, and I know even my suffering is known to You. Amid the chaos, wickedness, and confusion of this world, help me to look to You for help, and to speak to You knowing that You hear me, so that when my salvation comes through You I may sing Your praises. Amen.
