Bring Up A Child In The Way He Should Go

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Proverbs 23:10-35 and Psalm 118 (NIV)

(Aw Meng Yin from BRD Core Team)

READ:

The verses that spoke to me were Proverbs 23:13 and 14 (NIV).

OBSERVE:

The verses remind me that it is important to discipline a child, to teach a child what is right and what is wrong. To neglect to correct a child when he is wrong, will only lead to his destruction. A wise son, of good character, will make a parent’s heart glad.

APPLY:

As an educator, I have seen my fair share of children brought up well and those who were not. Parents who are not afraid to recognise that their child needs to be corrected and mete out discipline reasonably, sensibly and with the true intent to correct a wrong, sets the child in the right path. Sometimes, the fruit is not seen immediately, but with time, there are always good results.  Ignoring the warning signs of a child growing up wayward and excusing bad behaviour, will only lead to regret.

The passage also reminds me that it is a wise son, of good character that makes a parent’s heart glad. I must remember that what truly counts is character. As it’s often said, ‘Men of genius are admired, men of wealth are envied, men of power are feared; but only men of character are trusted.’ I need to help build good character in the children around me because, ultimately, it is character that will truly matter.

DO:

  1. I have a duty to teach children that cross my path at home, in church and in school what is right and what is wrong.
  2. I need to help younger parents see that character is more important than academic success or achievements in our children. Those are temporal and have no eternal value.
  3. I will be mindful of how I interact with everyone, the young and their parents. I will be more watchful of the things I say and the example I set for them.

PRAY:

Father, thank You for Your word that teaches us how to help our children grow up in You. Grant us wisdom and courage to teach them well that they may grow up to be men and women after Your own heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
